How fear sneaks into our lives
It happens to all of us at some point. Fear sneaks into our lives and stops us from doing what we want.
Fear of the unknown. Fear of what other people will think. Fear of getting it wrong. Fear that it’s not the right answer. Fear of what it will do to our family. Fear. Fear shows up when we least expect it. It’s a sneaky little bugger, because it’s a covert operative in our lives.
Maybe you’re thinking of returning to work. Maybe you’re thinking about a career change. Maybe you’re thinking about starting your own business. Maybe you really want to enjoy that hobby again. Why don’t we make progress towards our goal? Because fear holds us back.
Unless we are tuned into ourselves, unless we are dialled into the stories that we tell ourselves, we don’t even notice that fear is there. We don’t notice that it is keeping us in the holding pattern, in a waiting game. We don’t notice what fear is doing to us.
Fear may be a sneaky little bugger, but it’s a big problem. If we don’t become aware of our fears, we can’t acknowledge them and we can’t take action.
So how do we raise our awareness of our fears? Start now by thinking about what it is that you want, what is your goal, what have you been dreaming about lately. Then consider why you haven’t done anything about it yet? Why haven’t you taken a step forward? Why are you waiting? What are you waiting for? When you pause and ask yourself these questions, you will quickly realise what the fear is that’s in you. The fear that is keeping you here in this place, stuck.
Once you are aware of your fear, you can acknowledge it. Say it to yourself now, “hello fear, I see you there”. Ok, that may feel a little silly, but recognise when you feel fear. Once you acknowledge and recognise it, you can start to understand it. Start to understand why you’re telling yourself this particular story. Maybe you’ve been hurt in the past? Maybe it’s something that you saw happen to your sister? Also, there’s a possibility that it’s all in your head?
You are aware of your fear, you have acknowledged why it’s there. Now you are ready to put your fear to bed and take action. What is the next right step for you? The next right thing? Don’t overwhelm yourself with the big picture, just focus on the one little step you can take to start moving forward.
Once you start taking action, you will also start to feel released. The little steps will see fear replaced by courage. Taking action will see fear replaced by excitement.
So what is it that you’ve been dreaming about? What is it that you want? Put your fear behind you and start stepping forward.
