The Hidden Cost of Carrying Everything

June 15, 20263 min read

Many women reach a point where they believe they need more motivation, more discipline, or a better system. But often, what they truly need is relief. The hidden cost of carrying everything for too long is significant, and it is a weight many women bear quietly.

When the Heavy Becomes Normal

For many women, carrying a massive load becomes standard practice. We manage the home, support the family, care for ageing parents, and hold emotional space for teenagers or young adults. We remember all the details: is the soccer uniform washed and ready for the game? Do we have enough groceries for the weekend ahead?

We lead at work, keep things moving, and pride ourselves on being the reliable one. But over time, that heavy load starts to feel ordinary. That is when overload becomes our normal, and we stop noticing the toll it takes.

The cost does not always look dramatic. Sometimes it looks like snapping too quickly, being a little too sarcastic with your partner, or being short with your children. It might be feeling flat, bingeing on Netflix, skipping a workout, struggling to focus, or questioning your confidence. These are not massive, isolated events. They are little things that add up.

Because of the load we carry, these small things happen more frequently until we normalise them and make them a standard part of life. Eventually, this exhaustion starts showing up as self-doubt.

The Capability Trap

For many of us, being capable becomes our entire identity. I know this better than anyone. When it comes to juggling multiple responsibilities, I have put myself in some tricky situations where I just keep getting more loaded onto my plate. Why? Because I am capable. I am the helper, the organiser, the planner, and the strong one people lean on.

Even when you are drowning in that load, asking for help feels impossibly hard. But let us be frank: being capable should be a strength, not a trap. You are allowed to be supported, not just relied upon.

Redefining Relief and Support

Admitting that you need relief is not a sign of weakness. What if we repositioned how we view support?

  • Think of delegating as wisdom.

  • View asking for help as maturity.

  • Use boundaries to protect everyone.

  • Recognise that rest actually increases your impact.

Sometimes the next level of growth for women is not about doing more. It is about carrying less. Giving yourself relief from that constant load is a powerful growth strategy in itself.

Navigating the Load with an End Point

The first quarter of 2026 was definitely one of those heavily loaded moments for me. My husband was in and out of the hospital, and I was managing the family, working full-time, running my business, and handling our move to Thailand. There were times I literally had to do it all because there was nobody else.

But when people offered help, I accepted it because I knew I needed it to keep going. I carried that load with a clear end point in mind. Knowing my milestones and asking for help when I needed it was a powerful exercise in stepping up and practicing self-leadership.

Once I reached that end point before we even arrived in Bangkok, I was able to literally decompress. It did not mean sleeping more. It simply meant sitting with a cup of tea and enjoying the sunshine. Just switching off and being. For me, that was true relief.

You Do Not Need Fixing

If you have been feeling unlike yourself lately, feeling less patient, less clear, or less energised, take a step back and consider it. You probably do not need fixing. You might just need some support.
