Freedom Isn’t a Luxury. It’s a Decision
When you hear the word freedom, what comes to mind? For years, I thought freedom was something I’d get to “someday.” Once the kids were older. Once hubby’s job moved us somewhere more stable. Once I felt like I’d earned the right to prioritise myself.
But that “someday” never came.
I remember one morning vividly. I was racing around the kitchen, trying to get the girls ready for school, and Miss J accidentally spilled a glass of milk. I snapped. Way out of proportion to the situation.
The truth was, it wasn’t about the milk. It was about me. I had been putting everyone else first for so long that I felt like I was suffocating in my own life. That moment was the wake up call I didn’t even realise I needed.
I realised freedom wasn’t going to arrive with a bow on it one day. It was up to me to choose it.
We tell ourselves:
“I’ll focus on myself when things calm down.”
“I’ll start my business once I’m more confident.”
“I’ll create the life I want when I’ve earned it.”
But waiting only pushes freedom further away. You’ll never wake up to a magically perfect moment.
For me, choosing freedom meant starting small. It meant giving myself permission to explore what I wanted, rather than what was expected of me. It meant designing work around my life, instead of squeezing life in around work.
And as I started to take those steps, my confidence grew. I began to build a business that reflected my values, not just a career that kept me busy.
Choosing freedom doesn’t mean throwing caution to the wind. It means taking ownership of your choices today:
Setting boundaries so your time reflects your values.
Building a business model that supports your life, not the other way around.
Saying yes to what lights you up and no to what drains you.
If you’re ready to stop waiting and start living, here are three steps you can take today:
Define Your Version of Freedom
What does freedom look like for you? Is it flexibility in your schedule, financial independence, or simply space for creativity? Be specific.Identify the Smallest Next Step
You don’t need to overhaul your entire life in one move. Maybe it’s blocking one afternoon a week for your business. Maybe it’s saying no to a commitment that doesn’t serve you.Commit to Yourself
Say it out loud: “I choose freedom today.” Write it on a sticky note. Share it with a friend. The decision becomes real when you declare it.
Freedom isn’t waiting for you in some distant future. It’s here, at this very moment, ready for you to claim.
