Busyness Is Not Growth

Busyness Is Not Growth Anymore

Why Busyness Is No Longer a Badge of Honour

For a long time, many of us have been taught to view busyness as a badge of honour. The narrative has been clear: if you are busy, you are valuable. If you are stretched, you are committed. If you are exhausted, well, you must be working hard. But it is time to face the truth. Busyness and growth are not the same thing.

If you are constantly busy but still feel stuck in your life, it is time to look at the difference between moving and actually growing.

The Illusion of Progress

Let's be honest, being busy can feel incredibly satisfying. Your emails are answered, your to-do lists are ticked off, and everyone around you is getting supported. It gives the feeling of movement. However, activity is not always progress. You can be deeply productive at the small things while entirely avoiding the really important things.

Movement and momentum are simply not the same.

Hiding Behind the Hustle

The reality is that some women stay constantly busy because stillness asks harder questions of us. When we stop running, we have to face questions like:

  • Do I still want this?

  • Is this still working?

  • What needs to change?

  • What am I actually avoiding?

  • What do I actually want now?

Busyness can easily become a shield from the truth. Many women are not lazy; they are just overactive and under reflective.

The True Cost of Constant Motion

There is a heavy cost if you are always running. When you overload yourself, the consequences seep into every part of your life:

  • You carry a constant, heavy mental load.

  • You have shorter patience with the people you love.

  • You become highly reactive in your decision making.

  • Your creativity drops off completely.

  • Your confidence slowly starts to erode.

Constant busyness leaves you feeling disconnected from yourself. You cannot sustainably build your next chapter if you are coming from a position of deep depletion. Exhaustion might be common, but it is not normal.

Redefining What Growth Looks Like

Growth can look a lot less dramatic than constant hustle. Mature growth is selective. True growth comes from:

  • Having more clarity and setting firm boundaries.

  • Maintaining highly focused priorities.

  • Being exceptionally strategic in the actions you choose to take.

  • Taking rest that genuinely restores you, so you are pouring from a full cup.

  • Getting the right support to help you expand.

Sometimes, growth is not about doing more. It is about doing what matters.

A Personal Reflection

I know this from my own life. There have been seasons where I was incredibly busy but not truly moving forward. The first quarter of 2026 was prime evidence of that. I was working full time, running my own business, and managing a very busy family. On top of that, my husband was in and out of hospital, and we were navigating a massive move from New Zealand to Thailand.

I kept all the balls in the air. I managed to do it all. But during that phase, I did not actually grow. I didn't get what I needed for my ongoing personal growth. It wasn't until we landed in Bangkok that I found the opportunity to step back. Taking a quiet moment to sit with a cup of tea and just think allowed me to reset. In fact, creating my YouTube channel was a direct result of that quiet process.

When we focus entirely on keeping all those balls in the air, we deny ourselves the opportunity to step into who we really want to be. We stay stuck in our old self and prevent movement towards our new self. The shift does not have to be completely life altering. Those little shifts are exactly where the growth happens.

Your Invitation to Pause

If you have been busy but still feel stuck, this is your invitation to pause. Get your diary out right now and find some time for yourself just to sit and be. Make space for a cup of tea and some quiet reflection.

Ask yourself two vital questions:

  1. What am I doing that is creating motion?

  2. What am I doing that is creating growth?

Because they will not be the same. Figure out how you are going to get from your old self to your new self, and start building what is next with courage, clarity, and much smarter energy.
