Waiting For Permission

Why Waiting For Permission To Invest In Yourself Is The Most Expensive Decision You'll Make

I once built a spreadsheet to justify my own business - line by line, revenue projections, cost breakdowns and ROI timelines across three years.

Hubby never asked me to build it, I needed it for myself because I couldn't simply say “this matters to me and I want to do it”. Not without proof and not without a case.

What I know now, that I didn't know then, is that spreadsheet had nothing to do with the business. It was about what I believed I was allowed to want.

The Pattern That Keeps Capable Women Waiting

I’ve had clients who will spend thousands on a renovation without a second thought. They will pay for school fees, a family holiday, or a new kitchen appliance. They will say yes to all of it quickly, cleanly, without building a case.

But investing in themselves? That one needs a discussion with a partner, a waiting period, a quiet search for certainty that never quite arrives. The kind of scrutiny they would never apply to the gutters. And I want to be clear this is not a criticism, I lived it. I built the spreadsheet. But I do think it is worth sharing because underneath it is something most of us have absorbed without realising it.

We have been taught, subtly and repeatedly, that investing in ourselves is indulgent, that it needs to be earned and that we should be able to prove the return before we are allowed to say yes. We spend on everything except ourselves, and we call it being responsible.

The Gutters Story

A client of mine told me something I've never forgotten. She had been hesitating about working together, the cost kept circling in her mind and then something happened. She got a quote for some work on her house, the gutters. The number came back at almost the same figure we had discussed for coaching. She had approved the gutters in about thirty seconds.

Then she sat there, looking at both numbers side by side. One of these fixes a problem with the house, she thought, the other one changes my life. And I said yes to the gutters without thinking and I've been going back and forth on the other one for three weeks. She confirmed the coaching work that afternoon.

I love this story because it is not about money. It is about what we have decided deserves a yes without a case. The house, the car, the children's activities, those get approved. Our own growth? That is the one that goes on the maybe later list.

What Waiting Actually Costs

We talk about the cost of investing in ourselves but we rarely talk about the cost of not investing. And the cost is real, it is just invisible in the moment. Every year a capable woman waits, she loses compounding growth. Not just in revenue or career trajectory. In clarity, confidence and capacity. The woman she would have become by investing in herself three years ago simply is not available to her now.

We don’t get a bill for the confidence that did not grow. We don’t get an invoice for the business that didn’t get built. We don’t calculate the cost of staying stuck, because the cost of getting unstuck felt like the bigger risk. But it adds up and at some point, when you do the honest accounting you will realise the waiting cost them more than the thing they were waiting to afford.

Not investing in yourself is not a neutral decision, it is a decision with consequences. The consequences are just harder to see.

How Certainty Actually Works

Waiting is usually not really about the money or the timing. It is about certainty. She is waiting to feel certain before she says yes. Certain it will work. Certain she is making the right call. Certain enough to justify the commitment to herself and to everyone else.

But the feeling of certainty does not arrive before the decision it arrives because of it. You do not get certainty and then act… you act, and certainty grows in the doing. Waiting for certainty before investing in yourself is like waiting to feel confident before doing the thing that would make you confident. The sequence is wrong.

The women who make the biggest leaps in their lives and businesses did not feel ready first, they made the decision and the readiness came with it.

You Are Allowed to Back Yourself

If you have been sitting with something, an investment in your business, your growth, your next chapter, I want to leave you with a question.

What have you been putting off backing yourself on? And what has that wait already cost you?

Not as a guilt trip but as honest accounting. While we calculate the cost of investing, we almost never calculate the cost of not investing.

You are allowed to back yourself without a spreadsheet. You are allowed to say yes before the conditions are perfect. You are allowed to be worth the investment, right now, exactly as you are.
