Reinvention In Uncertain Times

How to Move Forward When Life Feels Uncertain

It is incredibly tempting to believe that we will finally make bold changes in our lives when things feel more settled. We tell ourselves we’ll take the leap when the kids are sorted at school, when the house is organised, when the economy bounces back, or when the world just feels a little calmer.

But the hard truth is this: certainty rarely arrives first.

If we wait for perfect conditions, if we wait for all the stars to align and every piece to fall into place, we can remain stuck for years. Today, I want to talk about something a lot of women are quietly wrestling with right now: how to move forward when life feels completely uncertain.

The Myth of "Waiting for the Dust to Settle"

Many women wait for their current season of life to feel stable before making a change. But if the last few years have taught us anything, it’s that life is rarely stable. The world is chaotic. Our economies, our family needs, our roles, and our health are changing all the time. Our priorities are constantly shifting.

If you require certainty before you make a move, you are literally handing your future over to circumstance. The world may feel uncertain, but your growth doesn’t have to be put on hold.

Real Reinvention is Messy

When we imagine reinvention, we often picture a dramatic leap. We envision a clean break, a flawless plan, and a fearless version of ourselves taking charge.

In reality, real reinvention begins a lot messier.

  • It begins in the middle of the tension of not knowing what’s next.

  • It begins in that “can I, should I?” moment.

  • It starts with that little bit of fear that tells you you’re stepping out of your comfort zone.

Reinvention starts when you are unsure and juggling multiple responsibilities. You are not going to have confidence first and then reinvent yourself. You are going to start the reinvention, and your confidence will catch up. Readiness is created through movement, not because of it.

Courage Comes Before Confidence

We often wait for a loud, dramatic "Aha!" moment to validate our choices. While it would be nice if that happened internally right from the start, it usually doesn't come until much later—when you look back at what you’ve achieved and finally say, “Wow, look at what I’ve done.”

Until then, you just need to have enough courage to make a start.

Overhauling your life in one go is never going to work. Instead, try giving it a go in smaller, manageable ways:

  • Have an honest conversation.

  • Update your CV.

  • Start that business idea as a part-time side hustle rather than a full-time gig.

Admitting that you want more, and that you are ready for more, is where you truly start to break through.

My Own Messy Middle

If you've been following my journey, you might know that my business originally started as support for expat parenting abroad. I hosted support groups for women who were physically transitioning across countries, and I loved doing it for years.

But one of my last conversations with my dad before he passed away changed everything. He looked at me and said, “You can do more. You’re limiting yourself. You need to step out.” It didn't hit me right away. For a long time, my work had felt hard and heavy, like I was banging my head against a brick wall. But after he died, I took the time to reflect on his words. I realised that if I leaned into what my soul was calling me to do, it was about more than just helping women change countries—it was about helping women step into who they are meant to be. And from that realisation, The Leap to Lead was born.

As I adjust, pivot, and shift, it’s because I’m constantly leaning into what my heart is telling me. I know what it feels like when you know something has to change, but you have no idea what it looks like yet.

Your First Step

It is going to feel yucky to start with. It’s going to feel icky because you are stepping out of your comfort zone. If you want to stay comfortable, keep doing what you’re doing. But if you’re ready for a change, you have to embrace the discomfort.

So, what is your first step?

Take a moment to tune in and listen to your soul. What is it craving? What does it need from you right now? Once you have an inkling, you don't need a giant leap. You just need to create time and space.

Here is your action plan:

  1. Get your diary or calendar out.

  2. Find a 15 to 20-minute window.

  3. Block that time out to sit down and consider your next move.

Make that commitment to yourself and to your future. Certainty is not a requirement for change, but courage is. Start small, take that first step, and let your momentum build from there.
